It's about time I created some Lord of the Rings inspired art! Here is my interpretation of Smaug The Magnificent, the dragon from The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Smaug is proud, arrogant, poised and fierce, I'll continue to work on these themes as the painting progresses. I imagine I'll develop the image into Smaug lounging upon his mound of gold within the depths of the Dwarven stronghold.

Music - 'Panic' and 'Storm' by Benny Hawes

Colour Wheel - Visit CGHUB.com and look in the Tools section.

Double Window - Open your image in Photoshop, then click Window, Arrange, New Window. You will need to drag the windows off the bar and resize them in order to see both at the same time. The Zoom % for each window can be altered individually by using the navigator.

  • How come you didn't use the blending mode color to paint your dragon? since you shaded it in black and white.

  • @ThusLife I usually use Colour, Multiply and Overlay to begin adding colours across the whole image. But colouring a B&W image using this method will produce flat colour with little or no variation in hue. Which is why, as I progress, you'll see me paint colours manually onto a normal layer, as if it were opaque paint. It's time consuming, but it's really the only way to achieve a traditional oil paint style of colour blending, with photoshop, that I know of, and which works for me.

  • @ThusLife that sounds best, I just started art and I am trying to figure out how to use color properly but i don't understand how to calibrate the brushes on photoshop to simulate charcoal or oil's so I just use the hard round 19 default brush in photoshop, but its still fun, and thanks for the videos and the tips, I was thinking about putting my work on youtube like you, and maybe we could be painting buddies if you have time to watch me :D it not that's okay.

  • @ThusLife You could try using the brushes I use, you can find them in the Tools section of my website. :)

  • What program or software you use in the video?

  • @seluz96 Photoshop CS4 :)

  • @Doodleedeedoodleedoo Thank you, I appreciate your encouragement. Hehe, well it seems Skyrim got a little confused, technically those beasts are Wyverns as they only have two legs, a dragon should have four! Love the game though, great inspiration for drawing :)

  • Wow, every time i think "k hes done on that part" you come back at it and add some more awesome detail, i'm blown away by your skill once more.

The people who created Skyrim should have hired you IMO, ah well, maybe in the future :)
