Do they ever?
We had near incidents happen like 10 times just before this. Pilots hit the sloped deck, foward momentum and they pop the brakes off on accident. LOTS of CC yelling on the ICS "BRAKES! BRAKES! BRAKES!"
Especially common for the shorter pilots (sub-5'2") cause they had to reeeaaaaach the peddles.

Wow!! Didn't now that there was another crash!! I was out there in Bahrain, 3 months after 744 crashed! I remember 748 replacing 744. Wow!! By the way.... This is AE3 Toliver!! What's up!
