I question whether it's apathy that allows all those people in marketing to spend their lives happily deceiving others. In the US and perhaps also Japan, business sets the cultural norms. The norm in this case is that you need not give a thought to your lying because you are doing the VERY GOOD THING of being productive.
Those prone to shame simply tell themselves that, and immediately everything is fine.

This just goes to show how broad manga can be in terms of context. If someone saw these lines reiterated in a movie or on a show, I doubt they'd think it came from a manga. Personally this is one of my favorite reads, and if this ever gets the green light in Hollywood, I hope the material is treated with utmost respect and adherence to the source.
