Curtiss Wilgold III (Hacker Racer) and Carenaught (modified version built at Curtiss factory) on the Niagara River at the Buffalo Launch Club in 1929, and at the New Bedford or Narraganset Bay Regatta in the same year (year might be 1928). Please see http://www.vintagehydroplanes.com/carenaught_wilgold3.html for background on the two boats.

Great stuff! John L Hacker designed many 255 class inboards, two of which - Little Miss Canada III and IV, world champs in '34 & '35 respectively - are the subject of an independent documentary film to be entitled "Harold & Lorna" (google this title for more info). One of the boats they raced against was Riptide; does anyone know if my suspicions the boat on the lift cables here are correct?

I came across this searching for Carenaught, which was an estate on Keuka Lake owned by my family from the 1940s into the 1980s. Interestingly enough, my great-grandfather Raymond T. Jones (who bought Carenaught the estate), my grandfather Charles D. Jones (who also owned it), my parents and I all have lived in Buffalo! I found this in a separate search from the one in which I found the "Carenaught & Wilgold III" page. Small world. I'd love to know how the boat became named "Carenaught."

I wish I could offer further information, but the only person I knew who might have been able to shed light on the naming, my father, is now deceased. Perhaps merely coincidence, though the geographical proximity is suggestive. Did your grandfather name the estate? Perhaps he was involved with Curtiss or with boat racing...
