I make my bedroom on the second floor of a single family detached dwelling. This living space was originally attic space in the house and converted to living space in the 1980s. Due to significant head losses in the central air duct work leading to the bedroom and an undersized central air compressor unit the room is very warm during the summer season. A window air conditioner isn't practical due to the casement style windows, and I didn't want to go through the trouble of installing duct work for one of the floor, inside, portable units. Therefore, I figured out a temporary measure to alleviate the heat on any particularly hot summer nights. I present to you, the Redneck Air Conditioner. Enjoy!

  • well done, you certainly are not a red neck, you obviously have a bit of an imagination and some brains unlike some of the idiots who have posted negative comments. Should you not have the window closed though to keep in the cold air?

  • @mrdrawde thank you for the compliment and your feedback! the video didn't make it apparent, but the window was only opened during the siphoning process. during the rest of the process the window was closed. in hindsight it would have been better to perhaps siphon into a bucket and then dispose of the excess water in a nearby bathroom

  • Ok if you use your kitchen freezer your only moving the heat from your room to the kitchen because when you freeze the water the heat from it is going into the air around the fridge

  • @mjc8bal good point! the kitchen is also served by central air so that room will still be cool, although yes the central air unit will work harder. this project was intended to be just some fun, and I incidentally transferred some "coolness" from the kitchen to the bedroom in the process. i never meant to insinuate that I was creating energy out of nothing, I'm not a liberal.

  • a chunese made ac cost about a $100!. you dumb redneck!

  • @catbug666 what does "chunese" mean? i must not understand because I'm a dumb redneck

  • It's very elegant in the living room

  • @jameslee522 I believe your statement is false. Salt will lower the temperature at which water freezes, yes. However it doesn't make ice colder. Pure ice water isn't only 32 degrees F it can be much lower depending on what temperature you make it below 32 degrees F. You could have 0 degree F ice as well as 32 degree F ice. Salt will just mean that it won't turn from water to ice at 32 degrees F, it will have to be lowered farther first.

  • @Rueuhy thank you, you obviously understand basic thermodynamics

  • @mrdrawde I did have the window closed during most of the operation, just opened it for a few moments while I was siphoning out the spent water

  • @19Duster74 I don't live there anymore, but probably about 400-500 SF

  • Chances are, those with negative comments aren't nearly smart enough to do much more besides figuring out mommy and daddy's thermostat. I'm sure this guy knew he could buy an a/c unit but there is something to be said for having the intelligence to create a solution yourself. That being said, there is room for improvement in the system but good work bud, keep up the engineering and all these kids will be collecting your garbage soon enough.

    That's the better idea...
