Employment Status: Why It Matters
As a contractor, you will often hear about IR35 and MSC Legislation.

In relation to tax laws, having an employed status means that the burden of worrying about either of these two legislations is lifted.

It also means that you'll benefit from the security of being an employee coupled with the flexibility that contracting brings.

How Do I Know If I Am Employed?
It is important to know if you have an employed status or not. You may be told that you do, but if you have the following you'll know for sure:

- HMRC accredited employment contract
- Paid through PAYE
- Holiday and sickness pay
- A P45 when employment terminates
- A P60 at the end of each tax year
- Health & Safety legislations are adhered to
- Access to a Group Pension Plan
- Statutory sick, maternity and paternity pay
- Adoption pay and leave

If you have been told that you are employed, but these elements don't sound familiar, then you should question your status with your "employer".
