On Sept. 27, 2006, I landed my first axel jump. I was 26 years old! I yelled "Hey!!" to my very talented friend, who was down at the other end of the rink doing triples. I think I fell on three or four axels before landing this one.
I am not your ordinary skater. I started classes at 8, private lessons at 14 and skated through high school, a little in college, then seriously got back into it when I graduated in 2002. When I started skating, I jumped and spun clockwise. At 15, my coach and I decided to switch my jumps because my backspin was stronger counterclockwise. I can still spin clockwise, most notably my flying camel. Because I couldn't afford many lessons, I videotaped myself frequently.
I have competed at three Adult National competitions and have passed my Junior moves in the field, Adult Silver freestyle and Silver dance test. My goals are to pass my Senior moves, Adult Gold freestyle and Gold dance test.
Hey! I'm 26! Maybe I'll finally land an axel soon!
