Here is the official Stephen King drinking game. Every time there is an obnoxious flash back, or one dimensional bullies with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, take a drink. A slap in the face towards fundamentalist christian conservatives in your movie? Take a drink. Is there an omnipotent being that has been there before the beginning of time? Take a drink. Does it take place in Maine? If so, take a drink. Does the black guy get killed first? If so, take a drink. I don't remember the rest.
The re-make didn't have the profoundly creepy quality of the 1979 mini-series, no, but I think you're being pretty harsh. It was a unique treatment of the vampires as something phantom-like at times; which is more true to King's novel. I also think that it's a good choice to keep Barlow as bestial and mute as possible. If it were up to me he'd be a cross between Dracula and Count Orlock. There's little doubt that the 2004 re-make wasn't as well done, but neither was it a disaster.
@ndbtb at that time, yes he was scary as hell, back in 1979...i was 9 at the time and what got me in the whole movie,is when that dude was in the jail, and he saw a shadow and look again, like wtf?? then he pop up,that is what scard me as hell...so u think,a 9 year old see that, yea that whould scar the shit out of u....lmaooo!!!
yea i like the real salem lot movie in 1979 wayyy better then the part 2 and the remake they did,but like they guy sead, hopefuly someday they will make a way better movie from the book stephen king did,it wayyy better then the movie and scaryer tooo.....
I guess I'm in the minority. Having read the book and seen the 1979 movie when it first came out, I really liked the way they portrayed Barlow in the miniseries. He was scary as hell! I wish they could've combined that with him talking as well, because in the book he was pretty fluent and didn't speak in growls. For a made in 1979 made-for-tv flick, it delivered the scary. I was a kid when I first saw it (and read the book later). The Glick brothers creeped me out back then...

There would be times where I watched the 1979 movie where I couldn't even look at the screen.
