Oldsmoblie invented the automatic transmission. It wasn't perfected for a few more years though. When it first came out, the popular saying was: "Slip and slide with powerglide". The shifts were anything but crisp like today's cars. There was a lot of lag between first and second and second to third gears: almost like a transmission slipping.
