He was born Rodrigo (or Ruy) Díaz de Vivar. Vivar being the town where he was born. It is near Burgos. He was born either in 1040 or 1043. Historians are not sure of the date. He died in Valencia in 1099. His name, "El Cid" was given to him by the Moors. In the mixture of the Spanish and Arabic language they used, they called him "As-Sid" (Lord or Chief). This was pronounced by the Spaniards as "El Cid", but they themselves actually called him "Campeador" (Champion)

  • IN real life Cid went to serve the Emir of Zaragoza, who was a Muslim, Since the city hd not yet been reconquered by Aragon. There were both Christan and moors fighting under and against Christian and Moorish kings, just as today.

  • 7:50 end intermission

well said... but what exactly is a "Cid"?

  • actually rodrigo had a mass of mercinaries who would follow him anywere and the king knew this.. he only hoped that the penalty would compell them to not leave the kingdom.. rodrigo was so much a man that not only did his men at arms follow him but many other in spain did as well and slot muslims,, rodrigo was and is THE CID.. a man of honour and truth,, to all others be damned for they lie and seek thier own ... the profits rodrigo saught only benifited his men and his people.
