Progressive Baptist Church Choir, recording artist A.TERENCE BROWNLEE & APPROVED
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.... It was the spring of 1998 when destiny finally met with purpose to form a powerful life-changing ministry for a present-day generation. This ministry had a triumphant sound to be heralded throughout the earth, not simply for worldly acclaim or applause from man, but that the glory of the Lord might further be revealed through the gift and ministry of song. Blending together an aggregation of anointed psalmists and minstrels, A. Terence Brownlee & Approved made its public debut, LIVE in Concert, June 1999. With a call to minister to the masses - beyond the walls of the church - the ultimate passion of Approved is to elevate a standard of true worship and praise within believers, as well as reaching the unchurched, backsliders, and unbelievers. The first album, FLY AWAY, released with regional acclaim in 2000. The sophomore project, READY WHEN HE COMES, is being distributed throughout the nation and receiving glaring reviews from other artists, producers, radio personalities, and gospel music lovers alike. A. Terence Brownlee has been blessed to share the stage with various gospel artists inclusive of, but not limited to: Hezekiah Walker & Love Fellowship, LaShun Pace, Byron Cage, BeBe Winans, John P. Kee & New Life, Rodney Bryant & Yet Unseen, B. Chase Williams & Shabach, Bishop Murphy Pace & The Voices of Power, The Indiana State Mass Choir, Witness, and Keith Brooks & New Creation. Jesus said ..But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth for the Father seeketh such to worship him... This scripture embodies the essence of A. Terence Brownlee & Approved. It is on this premise that the ministry stands firm, as living epistles read and known of men, offering themselves as vessels of sacrifice to be used for the Master's work and glory. "Be diligent to present yourself approved before God, a workman which needs not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." II Timothy 2:15

Theres a message behind the music of local contemporary gospel group A. Terence Brownlee & Approved. A message of faith, encouragement, love and peace. But the inspiration for the groups richly textured blend of subdued soulfulness, ... Full Descriptionurban pop gloss and cool vocal sophistication comes from one place only: God.The message of the music is multifaceted, Brownlee says. But that message is a timeless message. For nearly 10 years, Approved has bridged the gap between inspirational gospel music and mainstream urban credibility, wrapping a spiritual message inside the lush arrangements and instrumental textures of R&B.The technique has been more than successful — both with providing inspired musical fusions to longtime fans and bringing Christianity to younger listeners. The message of the Bible never changes, Brownlee says. But the way we deliver it should. You have to figure out a way to make the message relevant to this generation. To let them know thats its OK to be Christian and saved and young and still be cool. The message is a timeless message.Currently, the group — Brownlee, Gina Brooks, Virginia Githiri, Dionna Ivy, Fatima Washingon, Tamarah Brownlee, Nissa Majors, Melissa Houston, Demetria Jackson, Cameron Brooks, Cyntressa Dickey, Kyle Ivy and Jason Scott — is gearing up for the release of its latest album, Bless His Name: Live. The album, recorded during a concert at Lighthouse Deliverance Cathedral, recreates the kind of fevered performances you can see only on stage, Brownlee says.So much of gospel music is the feeling, the passion and the inspiration of the people in the audience, Brownlee says. I wanted to capture that element. The studio is great, but it doesnt give you that in-the-moment feeling you get with a live performance. The little mistakes, the crowd response, the improvisations. Those things give the songs more flavor. The album is the groups first since 2004. But the sabbatical both deepened and matured Brownlees writing, he says.Ive grown a lot, Brownlee says. Im writing a lot about life experiences now — still spiritually based, though. And there are times in the last four years when Ive been discouraged, but, somehow, Im still here.Thats the beauty of Christianity. Nothing is perfect. Nobody is perfect. But with Christianity, you have a place to go and get in touch with God. And maybe your situation hasnt changed, but you yourself (have) changed.(Emma Downs, Journal Gazette, July 11, 2008)
