Great, serious, well-crafted, well-made, well-written, well-acted and important movie. And it lost Best Picture to what ? American Beauty. WTF.

Does this sound familiar with today's age? He tells the truth, and they can't handle it.

I like this movie, but the corruption of the Tobacco industry never ceases to amaze me. To me, Al and Russell both deserved an oscar with how they portrayed the real-life charecters, but even the depiction of CBS was pretty good, i.e. Christopher Plummer as Mike Wallace. But when they decide to put money ahead of morality, that is sad.
I know, "money talks" but I'm getting tired of that excuse.

I thought that was an amusing retort.

I agree, I like American Beauty but you're right that this movie should've won. Also, Michael Mann is an underrated director.

True. He was great, but, to me, The Insider is a more important movie because it touches sensitive subjects which affect millions of people. American Beauty is also a powerful film, but strictly on a personal note. The fact that The Insider was actually based on a real lawsuit just gives it the edge. In my oppinion, this is the real Best Picture of '99,
