Queen Mary II

Mary died at Kensington Palace shortly after midnight on the morning of 28 December. William, who had grown increasingly to rely on Mary, was devastated by her death, and told Burnet that "from being the happiest" he was "now going to be the miserablest creature on earth". While the Jacobites considered her death divine retribution for breaking the fifth commandment ("honour thy father"), she was widely mourned in Britain. During a cold winter, in which the Thames froze, her embalmed body lay in state in Banqueting House, Whitehall. On 5 March, she was buried at Westminster Abbey. Her funeral service was the first of any royal attended by all the members of both Houses of Parliament. For the ceremony, composer Henry Purcell wrote Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary.

Henry Purcell:

Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695), was an English organist and Baroque composer of secular and sacred music. Although Purcell incorporated Italian and French stylistic elements into his compositions, his legacy was a uniquely English form of Baroque music.

  • This is a heart rending presentation. The period instruments are a delight matched by the exquisite and crystal clear voices of the singers. The soloists are pure and have excellent diction.

  • @AGMundy totally agree, and it's always a pleasure to see Baroque Brass of London perform, there was some clips of them on YT performing at 2009 or 2008 Proms - couldn't find it right now but sure it's still on YT...

  • Heavenly music, but too much make-up on one of the singers.

  • @radiofreeantwerp - LOL, I know - they could tone it down a bit, give it a more raw feeling visually so the music stands out more....
