In her very first outing as a live performer, in 1990, Mariah showcased her talent in a mini concert at the Tattoo Club, singing songs from her self-titled debut album

  • Heres my opinion:

Female with the most vocal talent and best songs: Mariah Carey

Male with most vocal talent and songs: Michael Jackson

  • Vocal perfection from start to finish. I'm not a big fan of a lot of her stuff, but nobody can deny mariah has an incredible voice when she sings songs like this one. Somebody mentioned Madonna in one of these posts. Madonna has NO talent other than a little bit of dancing ability. She can't now nor could she ever carry a note to save her life. Madonna is all sleeze and slick packaging and promotion. I wouldn't walk across the street to meet her.

Mariah is one of Leona's biggest influences, she's said it many times. Mariah's "Anytime you need a friend" is one of Leona's favorite songs. That in itself explains their similarities. All I did was draw a comparison that was taken far out of context.

  • @crazy2hazy I meant that the two artists do not share all the same influences. And it is subjective, but that's what makes them different.

  • @MalRulesxx

I don't know what you mean by Mariah not having many influences, because she has very many. And expressing emotion is quite subjective, don't you think?

  • @crazy2hazy 90's pop was naff. Leona sings R&B and ballads, quite classically in songs such as Run and Here I Am. And she does have many more influences outside the 'big three', which Mariah Carey does not have. Also, the old Mariah improvised a lot and focused on the music rather than connecting with her audience, but Leona expresses far more emotion on stage. That is why they are different as performing artists. :)

  • @rekupp Do you think that was Leona's choice?

  • @crazy2hazy Sorry to burst in, Leona Lewis got with Walter Afanasieff on purpose to emulate what MC did at the beginning of her career. Her co-produced her 1st and 2nd album.

  • @MalRulesxx

But this comment only applies to Leona and early Mariah (1990-92) only, because Mariah's vocals improved as well as her stage presence and she was able to convey that strength all the way through her performances in her prime.

And Leona does not sing with classical technique at all. Her genre is basically 90's pop, which has elements of R&B, rock, and whatever was the rage at the time. Her musical choice is a mix of Mariah, Whitney, and Celine, only not as good lol

  • @MalRulesxx

I guess I was referring to her reserved power. Notice how at the beginning she starts off soft and quiet and as the song progresses she unleashes tons of power and conveys so much emotion. It's almost like she's growing into herself on stage, it's quite interesting. That's a quality I think she and Leona share. Their light, fluttery tones make them seem smaller than they are until they start belting.

  • @crazy2hazy I still don't see what Leona's performances have to do with this, Vanishing is a style nothing like Leona's.
