@poosaypirate ps, blackberrys or rhaseberries or others require bigger pots than window boxes but they can actually hang out of your garden walls providing you with optimizing your space used even more -
also you could put each of your rope hanging pots in tripple vertical rows as well.
- can you tell yet that im a great enthusiast for micro gardening?
its my fave!
someitmes i take over tree islands in cities next to where i live too and put fun things in!

@poosaypirate finially, your pots -nobody is THAT poor not to afford plastic windowboxes but if you seriously are, rig sthinup or wait for garbagenight, people throw out lovely plants &pots! good luck exelent work, rock on!

pt-2
it would openup the floor space in case of an emergency & actually (if you do a double row, one inside one outisde the rail) provide more space for you than you have now and not obstruct your footway- a brilliant plant to use on in such a space is strawberries- theyre so pretty & so rewarding. & after fruiting will provide runners which actually hang & look cool as hell. you can also try black berries, thats something u can put against the wall of the building since they can grow upwards.

ok - ive alot to say here.
First, when i lived in NYC, i had a fire escape outside my window and started with some roses i had which actualyl rooted- it wasnt longbefore a roomate pointed out that , yes, its not legal in NY to put pots on fire escapes- should be obvious why, but that brings me to the next two points-
I LOVE radical gardening.- i love your garden, but i think u could kill a few birds with one stone if you used window boxes on the actual fire escape border instead of on the floor

Tie a few light colored sheets over those when it gets cold and they may last quite a bit longer.
Make the sheets work like floating row covers. I wonder if you could rig something such as hula hoops to hold the sheets off the plants a bit.
