Um, I have read the books of both series, and I cannot honestly believe that there was no other way to protect Harry beyond 'throw him in an abusive home and leave him there'. Dumbledore may have had a masterplan, but he manipulated everyone into following it instead of genuinely working with others to achieve his goal. And yes, Gandalf had to come back to finish his work, because he had a job to do and was going to do it himself, not through a elven year old -.-
