It's done in just the right tempo. Performing chorals too slow IMHO is a commonly made mistake. Furthremore this choral takes place at almost the beginning of St. Matthew Passion where it acts as a small retarding element in the middle of a fast-advancing (dramatic) happening. A too slow performance of this choral would break the suspense.

Uh, more slowly, PLEASE! This is nothing happy or funny, it is full of tears and sufferings! And more Quiet... it is helpless and incomprehensible. One has to listen to the lyrics and analyse them to get the atmosphere before one can sing this
