To those of you that haven't tried welding thin sheet metal this video may look boring. But if you have tried it you will now know that this dude is one AWESOME welder! That last continuous weld on such thin metal at such high power is seriously difficult stuff.

This really helped. I'm trying to buttjoint thin (~0.045") patches and was always burning through. I had no idea that you could crank the power like that. Thanks!

@rinscoe oh, I should have added that I was practicing on junk cars in the yard before I even touched my baby!
@redwingsteelworks I'm trying to weld in a small sheet metal patch panel in the trunk of a car. got my Hobart 140 set at 1 and I have varied my speed between 10 and 20. No matter what I do as soon as I make contact it blows thru the sheetmetal. Any suggestions? using flux core .030 being outdoors and kinda drafty.

@mta415 Try using a little bit thicker piece of patch material and direct most of the welding arc onto the thicker piece. You could always try a backer strip underneath the welds also. The flux core isn't helping you for this job but, it can be done. Also from what you are describing you are most likely but welding the 2 pieces together. Try lapping instead by having the patch piece a little bigger than the hole you are filling. Looks won't matter unless it's a show car.

@redwingsteelworks Thanks a bunch, will try it with gas and solid wire. are you using 024 or 030 when you weld sheet metal. I should have added that I have only been welding for a month but so far this is the only hiccup I've had.

@mta415 I use 030 or 035 I've never needed to go below 030. Hang it there, welding thin metal is one of the hardest things to learn in welding. There is really no substitute for experience, soon you will view your welding gun as an extension of your hand and you will be able to control it just like you control your hand. How do you feel holes in sheet metal like the holes left after taking off the mouldings? what would you suggest?

@souza777 If you choose not to use a brass back up strip, the best way is to just turn the heat down and start and stop often. By starting and stopping you let the metal cool down between trigger blasts. That way it wont get so hot that it blows out another hole.
