I was at the air show one time and shot this video, I thought it was cool.
Probably not as cool as being there but this is the next best thing.
It is a little hard to see all the detail, due to it is nightime, but it is okay.
"Fat Albert," is a C-130 cargo plane that is attached to the Blue Angels.
This small clip was shot at night [obviously] on a small digital camera during a JATO [Jet Assisted Take-Off] demostration.
Why do they have rockets on a crgo plane?
For heavy loads and/or extrem, ely short runways.

Hope you enjoy!

  • THATS NICE AMAZING

but that isnt the original JATO system, this one is like more a mix of rockets, pyrotecnic and flares...

    source: old usaf pilot

    =)

    anyway, its amazing

  • Your probably right, I don't know for sure. It is an Air Show, so it would make sense for the added pyrotechnics.

Either way, it still looks cool and I'm sure the ride is cooler.

    Thank you

  • who is the old USAF pilot ??

I dont think they just strap on any old "mix of rockets".

  • I don't know who the "old USAF" pilot is, but he does have a good point. Like I said, it was during an Air Show, so I understand the use of pyrotechnics for that added "WoW" factor, but maybe they use different types for combat use without all the flares and sparkles coming out of the back of the rocket? If anyone knows, please feel free to comment....

  • i was just at a blue angels show and fat albert didn't use the jets there. . . i feel ripped off!

  • Sorry to hear that, I got another of the Rockwell B1B "Lancer" taking off at night, got a what seems to be a 30 foot after-burner cones coming out the back, sweet

  • Look at all that black smoke.

Al Gore is gonna' be pissed!

  • We used JATOs on HC130's in Vietnam. Those looked like the real things. We had to use them if we suspected Viet Cong in the area. They loved to shoot at the HC130's so we liked to get as much altitude as possible over friendly terrain.

  • Buckle up

  • Can't be very good for the airframe. At Dobbins in Marietta GA you often see the 130 pilots practicing "Baghdad bugouts", extreme takeoffs and landings without JATO - engines are probably twice as good as the originals.

  • nope, those are your standard JATO bottles, no extra pyro or special FX....they will still be used by LC-130's ski-equipped for Arctic/ Antarctic missions

  • It went up 45 Degrees. 90 degrees is vertical. It went half of vertical.

  • But the Blue Angels has made this one of there trade marks that they do with all of their shows.... thats gonna be sad.. Fat Albert has always done that and when i went to a Blue Angels show and they did that its the main part of the show that i remember. I wish they would just keep it for the Blue Angels.... that sucks

  • @kelseygagirl21 Yep, but sadly it's over. Nov 14 is the last JATO flight Fat Albert will ever see. This is because JATO hasn't been used since Vietnam. They make C-130's with enough power to take off like this without JATO nowadays. I still think it sucks :(

  • JATO stands for jet assisted takeoff

  • Wtf is JATO?
