RIALTO, Calif. (KABC) -- Police arrested an alleged hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 12-year-old boy riding his skateboard in Rialto.
Matthew Hudson, 21, was arrested Monday. Rialto police say the boy, Jonathan Olagues, had just left a family barbecue on his skateboard when Hudson struck him and then fled the scene.
Authorities said the incident happened about 8:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Home Street.
"He was on his way home, and this guy came from nowhere," said Minnie Lambert, Olagues' aunt.
Robert Moedl says the crash happened right in front of his home.
"I heard my neighbor screaming, 'They hit him, they hit him,' and that's when I ran outside, and he was laying over there, and, you know, he was gone," Moedl said.
Police had their suspect within eight hours. Police say the car's license plate was found at the scene of the crime.
"With these type of traffic fatalities, for the drivers of the suspect vehicles to report their car stolen later on - and around 3:30 this morning the driver called the Rialto Police Department to report it stolen," said Rialto police Lt. Randy De Anda.
The district attorney's office will determine whether Hudson will be charged with vehicular manslaughter or murder.
A candlelight memorial will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 8 p.m. at 400 Home St. in Rialto. For more information, contact Herminia Lambert at (909) 355-3434. A memorial fund has also been set up at Chase Bank for Jonathan Olagues' family
