On October 21, 2009, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) spoke on the Senate floor about the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which will be included as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act. The Senate is expected to vote on the Defense bill later this week.

    You can protect yourself yourself. All you have to do is stop committing violent crime against whichever group it is that you hate.

    Which group is it (that you hate)?

    Blacks, whites, gays, straights, women, men, or members of some religion?

  • What should not be tolerated is a government wanting to punish more because it thinks it knows why you committed a crime. This is the thought police. Who will protect us from you?
