continental 48 states of America by motorcycle for the last 13 months. This is what he calls Woodrow Landfair has traveled the continental 48 states of America by motorcycle for the last 13 months. This is what he calls Urban Camping (Truck Stop Sleeping).

Woodrow Landfair had never ridden a motorcycle. He had never written a book. He had no experience in public speaking.

After earning a degree in Creative Writing in the spring of 2006, Landfair pawned all he had and dedicated himself to traveling the 48 states while writing his first novel.

To lighten expenses, Landfair sold his car, purchasing a 1995 Suzuki Intruder motorcycle to undertake the odyssey.

To promote himself he performs his short-stories at venues nationwide.

To support himself --and to gather material--Landfair does manual labor and odd jobs. He's worked as a room service bell hop, a door-to-door salesman, a babysitter, a bartender, a waiter, and a food-runner. He's built a fence in Florida, been a bouncer in New York City, changed oil in Virginia, and lifeguarded in Washington, D.C.

Landfair has lived in homeless shelters in New York City. He has stayed as a volunteer in the Katrina ravaged Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans. He's slept and dined in the mansions of millionaires, in trailer parks, in truck stops, and in roadside fields.

His journey through the 48 states is part of a curriculum in self-education. Landfair is learning as a writer, as an artist, as an American, and as a human.

Born in Richmond, Virginia, Stanley Woodrow Landfair, nicknamed Pack, grew up traveling between his father in San Francisco, California and his mother in Springfield, Virginia.

He attended the University of Texas where he spent his first two years as a Midshipman on a US Navy ROTC Scholarship. From 2003-2005 he was a member of the Longhorn baseball team. He was twice named their Teammate of the Year (2004, 2005) and won an NCAA National Championship (2005). He graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing.

Landfair's intention was to pursue a career as a U.S. Navy SEAL before setting out to become a writer. When a back injury ended his former aspiration, Landfair began work on the latter.

As for his plans after touring the 48, Landfair quotes Louis L'Amour: "My intention was to be a writer. I would make no effort to acquire a trade."

  • I do what you do, but I do it in a little Geo Metro. I pulled all the seats out of it except the drivers seat. I built a plywood floor and then put a foam cushion on that for sleeping. The windows are lightly tinted so nobody can see in. Off to points NW and Alaska in about 3 weeks time. Doing this in a car is much better. I get to bring the gear I need. Fishing pole, stove, etc.. And, my bed is right beside me. Have fun!

  • Very inspiring. I like your video because it shows people we urban campers are not all bad folk. Nor are we just bums, its a travel prefrence. Ive urban camped in San Francisco Chicago Amsterdam Paris and Barcelona to name a few, and your right about people being more arfaid of you than you are of them.

  • I tried urban camping once, when I was 21 years old. For about 30 minutes. Until two police officers showed up and put the fear of God into me. That took about 20 years to recover from, before hard luck times forced me make yet another attempt. Local law enforcement took no notice of me that time. I guess they had better things to do.

  • woodrow fell into the "lot lizard" lifestyle, and noone has heard from him since. rumor has it hes turning tricks at truck stops throughout the pacific northwest.

  • This vid is great. hope you're well

  • I'm glad to see someone else who takes this seriously. A search on YouTube for "urban camping" brings up quite a bit of parody. Not that I mind; I think those videos are funny. I am a 24/7 "professional" guerrilla urba camper myself, and I'm putting together an Internet mini-series on my experiences as well as some how-to advice. Come check out episode IV of my guide to urban camping, playing now on my channel. Thanks!

  • Very cool video. I'm a brand new motorcyclist and noticed you have a beautiful bike. What kind is it?

  • Like your video! Personally I like to stealth camp where no-one can see me. I've slept under the Eiffel Tower in Paris a few times but when outside of a city I always sleep out of sight. Thanks for posting this, very enjoyable and it's a pity more people who camp by the road don't post their experiences also.

  • You forgot to mention the showers and lot lizzards....lol

  • Yeah you got that also. Duh!!!

  • thanks for the idea
