In the Haro Strait, just off the northwestern side of San Juan Island. Video taken from my parents' sail boat using a Kodak DX7630. The voices you hear are Captain Don & First Mate Susie (my parents) talking about the Orca Whale Naming system. Orcas are a captivating species. They have received a lot of notoriety and attention since Shamu first splashed people at SeaWorld (also, the movie Free Willie II was filmed not far from this location). If you are in the water and a pod of Whales approaches, the law states you must not get any closer to them, and your engine must be shut off. We were under sail power when this footage was taken. I think most of the locals are more irritated with the whale watching traffic than with how close the boats get to the whales.
