Death of Fear

The Death Of Fear by Azeldin El-Sharif.
Hamza is a journalist who attempts to exercise freedom of speech in Libya, but unwittingly realizes what he has taken on. The play is dedicated to the memory of Daif Al-Ghazal who grew up under the regime and was kidnapped, tortured and killed for criticizing the regime.

One of 5 short plays by new refugee writers presented as script-in-hand performances. These are personal takes on a range of experiences and from perspectives which are not commonly told. The writers' skills and development have been guided by leading playwright Sonia Hughes over a considerable period and this will be a chance to take in this fresh material almost straight from the minds of the writers themselves.

Coming from Benghazi in Libya, Azeldin's writing is fuelled by his wish to educate and tell the people of Britain who are concerned about freedom and human rights, about the current and historical situation in Libya. He wants to develop his writing and to write stories for films and for TV. He is inspired by the strength of the media and is currently also on a new media course to learn film making.

The Sparks project is a unique opportunity for emerging writers from refugee backgrounds to present theatre in their own voice. Over the last six months, nuggets of ideas have been transformed into living breathing plays, through that journey the participants have learned to communicate through characters, visuals and action. Sparks is the beginning of their writing careers in the UK.
