I worked for a bank servicer who still uses these mainframes (a newer version). Some of the banking application programs I worked with had creation dates all the way back to 1969! What a pain modifying these programs! If you exceeded the addressing length within a register (only 4096 bytes) you blew up! You had to break apart the main application and call another program or work around it in some other way. During the earliest days, the speed of each instruction needed to be considered.

Just think, No segmentation registers, NO stack pointers, nothing stupid like what we have now, and this was back in 1965!!
