Video of driving a 1989 VW Jetta with a 1.6L NA Diesel without using the clutch. The clutch was only used for first gear and then to shift all of the other gears, the revs were matched. No grinding of the gears.

  • arent you worried about your syncro's?

  • I should be saving them since I am not using them. When syncros go out, you would have to double clutch or match revs anyway. Just like driving a semi with no syncros, match revs or double clutch, same thing. So, I am saving them and the clutch to some degree.

  • Espcially if you're double-clutching them. :)

  • you're stupid. he was exactly right. semi's have no synchros, and they shift just fine.

  • almost all of the wear a clutch recieves is from slippage. I know someone who has a 440,000 kilometer odometer on their 1.6 diesel with ORIGINAL clutch. its easy to have an original clutch as long as you don't slip it.

  • there are flaws in your logic so vast I don't think I can contain them within youtubes comment limit

  • even if you don't time it exactly, you can still mesh the gears without grinding, but that's because of the synchros. they are forcing the engine RPM down so the input/output shafts are turning at same speed, allowing the gears to lock in.

i think you can throw out the brass bearings after a while. but if you've been shifting like this for a long time without breaking anything, then what do i know. personally i think it's easier to use the clutch.

  • good call. ive got an 86 jetta 1.6na and first to second when cold is rough sometimes. might end up pulling the trans and getting new syncros lol. gotta love the fuel mileage hey
