(a.k.a. WHERE TIME BEGAN)
This production from Spain is very faithful to the novel. This film is worth watching and is fun for the entire family. There are a lot of monsters there, especially a giant gorilla (perhaps to rival or cash in with the 1976 KING KONG remake). You will also be surprised that this film, Juan Piquer Simon, the director, wanted to cash in with such films as ones made by Amicus (e.g. LAND THAT TIME FORGOT and AT THE EARTH'S CORE). This is better than the Disney remake. You will also be surprised that in the U.S. release, there is a different opening title sequence. It is a pop-song with clips from A TRIP TO THE MOON.

A must for fans of this kind of stuff.

Enjoy

  • Looks a whole lot better than that 3D crap movie the other year.

  • @Tareltonlives I agree. If I want 3D, I would be better off watching the new TRON movie.

  • This is NOT "very faithful" to the novel. It still is a fun movie, but it is not faithful to the novel (especially in themes).

  • OK since I never sen the movie, tell me and be specific.

For one thing, in the novel, there is a ground sloth and a giant ape.

  • So, This is the Gaint Ape Movie I was having a hard time remembering.

  • I love Juan Piquer Simon's movies, especially Supersonic Man. That movie's way better than Superman.

  • I've been trying to find information about this film for a long, long time. I saw it with my parents when I was really young, maybe just three or four (I have a damn good memory) and saw it on television throughout the eighties but it disappeared. This film is damn cool.

  • "This production from Spain is very faithful to the novel"

    Indeed.

@MattBL, did you even read a translated version of Jule Verne's novel?

Axel Lidenbrock (german) is the narrator, his uncle Otto (german) is the scientist and Hans Bjelke is a guide,

the only truthfull thing for me is the fight beetween the two monsters at 1:05 however no girl in Verne's version, no King Kong etc, so read the novel it's a low version in Verne's work.

  • It is not faithful to the theme of the original: a psychological journey of a father-figure uncle and his "son"/nephew reconciling their relationship. No girl tagged along in the novel because of that. Most movies feel the need to insert a girl.

@Tareltonlives - I agree. BTW, that was MattBL that mentioned the ape in the book.

  • @dmmerchant Technically, there was a giant ape in a dream sequence added for the English language print

  • This is Jules VERNE , Jules VIEIRA from Paris , or Nantes FRANCE to the True ATLANTIS of PORTUGAL & BRAZIL. This Version of my "Past Life`s`novel ``Les Voyage Aux Centre de La Terre`` or Voyage misinterpreted in England as ``Journey to the Center of The Earth` has received Jules VERNE, Jules VIEIRA AWARD of ``PLATINUM RUBY CRYSTALLINE AWARD``. IT is FULLY faithful in every respect to my Past-Life`s Novel. Beating the GOLD AWARD of the Original 1958 Version Movie of the same title!!!!
