American magazines 14th Readers Poll survey conducted from mid-January to the end of March this year ranked Bali as the best island destination in the world.
Cebu in the Philippines ranked no. 4 among the top 10 island destinations in Asia. No other Philippine city, island, resort, hotel, or airline made it to the listing in other categories.

Respondents were asked to rate the islands based on natural attractions, activities and sights, restaurant and food, people and value. They had to rate a candidate on a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 means poor and 5 means excellent.
Phuket in Thailand ranked second last year but failed to land in this years top ten.
For the past three years, the announcement of the Worlds Best Awards winners has been preceded by the release of findings from The Survey of Affluence and Wealth in America, created by Travel + Leisures parent company American Express Publishing and Harrison Group, a strategic-marketing research firm.

Bali is a paradise island that lies between Java and Lombok. It is the largest tourist destination in Indonesia and the most popular tourist destination in Asia, renowned for its highly developed arts, including dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking and music.
Bali was inhabited by Austronesian peoples by about 2000 BC who migrated originally from Taiwan through Maritime Southeast Asia. Culturally and linguistically, the Balinese are thus closely related to the peoples of the Indonesian archipelago, the Philippines, and Oceania. Stone tools dating from this time have been found near the village of Cekik in the island's west.
Balinese culture was strongly influenced by Indian and Chinese, and particularly Hindu culture, in a process beginning around the 1st century AD. The name Bali dwipa ("Bali island") has been discovered from various inscriptions, including the Blanjong charter issued by Sri Kesari Warmadewa in 913 AD and mentioning Walidwipa. It was during this time that the complex irrigation system subak was developed to grow rice. Some religious and cultural traditions still in existence today can be traced back to this period. The Hindu Majapahit Empire (12931520 AD) on eastern Java founded a Balinese colony in 1343. When the empire declined, there was an exodus of intellectuals, artists, priests and musicians from Java to Bali in the 15th century.
