This is from a very rare recording of a live performance of the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 15 with John Ogdon, piano, and Leopold Stokowski conducting the American Symphony Orchestra in 1969 in New York City.

  • Where did you get this recording, by the way?

  • @OrangeSodaKing I acquired it from a CD I found at a local classical record shop years ago. It's exceedingly rare! it also includes excerpts from the rehearsal.

  • A revelation! I have never heard it played like this before. i am not surprised the audience thought it was the end of the piece. there are two more movements.

What a massive show of power and strength. perhaps this is how Brahms would have played it... I used to think of this piece as being rather slow and ponderous. Now Mr. Ogdon has shown me otherwise.

Mr. Stokowsky was often a little behind; the oboe was too loud and the clarinet sharp in places. Ugh!

Now i want to hear the other movements!
