More info here: http://bit.ly/gbk1b2 Duran Duran's December 2000 Pop Trash tour featured the world's first use of "augmented reality" technology in a live concert.

Duran Duran and Charmed Technology worked together to create advanced 2D/3D visual effects which allowed animated characters to appear live on stage with the band.

This collaboration began during a backstage meeting before a concert in Los Angeles. Jarrell Pair gave a simple demonstration of the AR toolkit to band members Nick

Rhodes, Simon Le Bon, and Warren Cuccurullo, and the idea of using AR in a live concert was born.

This video shows effect tests using the AR Toolkit prior to the concerts. Real time video effects tests are also shown.

These tests were the basis for vide effects shown during live performances "Hallucinating Elvis", "Girls on Film", "White Lines", "Late Bar", "Lava Lamp", "The

Reflex", and more.

Details on this work can be found at this link http://bit.ly/gbk1b2 and in the publication cited below

Jarrell Pair, Jeff Wilson, Jeff Chastine, and Maribeth Gandy "The Duran Duran Project: The Augmented Reality Toolkit in Live Performance". The First IEEE International
Augmented Reality Toolkit Workshop, 2002.

  • I like it!

I have had real trouble using 3d models for augmented reality. any advice?

  • Models exported from 3D Studio Max, Maya, and other programs often contain data that a AR renderer cannot use. The trick is finding what you can and cannot export. If you can find someone that has strong 3D export plugin programming skills, they may be able to help you determine what guidelines you should follow for exporting successfully to an AR scene. I'd also suggest searching user forums and tutorials for guidance.

  • I wish I would have been able to see one of the shows using AR! It is very hard to get the full effect, I'm sure unless one is in person. Still, I love it!

  • I love this kind of stuff! Thanx for sharing that!
