Abraham Lincoln once said "Best way to defeat an enemy is to make him your friend". President Saddam Hussein was our friend, and we encouraged him to invade Kuwait by saying and doing nothing whilst he prepared for the invasion. Then we used the Kuwait invasion as a pretext to break our friendship. Then we beat on his country for another ten years, and then used some dubious pretext to finally invade Iraq.
