On January 30, 2009 the first baby elephant seal was born at Race Rocks in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It is probably the first to be born in Canada, as Southern Vancouver Island has been the location for some time of the most northerly haulout for this marine mammal. Two days later another Elephant seal pup was born in the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve on the Middle Island of the Archipelago. I remember reading about this seal. It's weird to see elephant seals alone - they're almost always in a large group when they're on land. (And by 'alone' I mean just the three of them.)

wow, you don't get too many species like this: the adult is cuter than the cub.
This thing eats other seals too right?
