Afghan President threatens to send forces into Pakistan

Afghan President Hamid Karzai is warning Pakistan he is prepared to send troops across its border to kill Taliban militants. Karzai has long pleaded with Pakistan and the international community to confront tribal area safe havens.
As Taliban leaders threaten to continue sending fighters across the border to attack Afghan and foreign forces, President Karzai says his country has the right of self defence.

He says in Helmand province, most of the fighters over the past two months have come from Pakistan.

Karzai says it's better for Afghan troops to be killed during offensive operations into Pakistan than in militant attacks in Afghanistan.

Karzai said, "Afghanistan has the right of self defense. When they cross the territory from Pakistan to come and kill Afghans and to kill the coalition troops, it gives us exactly the right to go back and do the same. This is a two way road in this case and Afghans are good at the two road journeys. We will complete this journey and we will get them and we will defeat them."

Military experts say counterinsurgency campaigns are extremely difficult to win when militants have safe territory where they can train, recruit and stockpile supplies.

Pakistan argues the Afghan-Pakistani border is too long to prevent people from crossing, even with the entire army along the border.

The country now is seeking peace deals with militants in its border region.

Taliban warns of an escalation in attacks against NATO and Afghan forces if Karzai sends forces across the border.
