Led by Chief Almir Surui, the indigenous Surui tribe of the Amazon rainforest tell a story of how the forest is their livelihood in this Google Earth tour. They first had contact with the outside world in 1969, and their familes suffered immediately thereafter from the spread of disease. Now, they have recuperated and they fight to protect their rainforest from illegal logging with tools like Google Earth. Chief Almir Surui has worked with many partners to help reforest the logged areas and to prepare for entering the carbon marketplace. The Surui will soon be able to measure and sell the carbon credits made available by their reforestation efforts.
