Chestnut, some species called chinkapin or chinquapin, is a genus of eight or nine species of deciduous trees and shrubs in the beech family Fagaceae, native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The name also refers to the edible nuts they produce. 栗はブナ科クリ属の木の総称。北半球の温暖で湿潤な地域に広く分布。落葉樹。栗の樹は硬く耐久性が高く、木材としては高級品の部類に入る。耐久性の高さから風雨にさらされ­る鉄道の枕木などにも使用される。漢字が「西」と「木」の組み合わせであることから西方浄土になぞらえて位牌などの仏具に使用されることも多い。
