Jackson Academy 5th and 6th grade students had the opportunity to enjoy a Science Fun Day on October 23. Dr. John Hunt, professor at Mississippi College, created the program using a model that incorporates volunteers to help teach various science principles through simple projects.
Groups of three and four students lined up at one of over thirty science stations and participated in a brief demonstration of a simple science project. Every four minutes a whistle blew and each group moved to the next station. At the end of three hours every child had visited each station and learned a practical science concept at each stop. Volunteers asked questions to make sure the children understood the principle being taught.
The program was originally developed to motivate kids to not just study science, but to enjoy learning. The goal is to motivate students to want to learn more and to provide teachers examples of ways to explore science concepts.
In addition, students created solar ovens to use for cooking using only solar energy. They also designed a carrier to protect a raw egg. The students dropped the projects from the top of the football bleachers to see which creations prevented the egg from breaking. Posted by M. Mills
