はじめまして!! A big hello to all my fellow guitarists all over the world. I really enjoy watching your great guitar videos on YouTube, keep up the great work!

I'm back today to join in on the fun again, with another pickup comparison.

本日は、私のギタービデオを見て頂きまして、有難う御座いました。 横浜に住んでいるアメリカ人Andyです。宜しくお願い致します。

This time, I did this quick, condensed, comparison for those interested in hearing what the Seymour Duncan Jazz SH2N humbucker (neck) and JB TB4 (bridge) installed in a Jackson DK2M sound like as both full humbuckers AND coil tapped, in a CLEAN environment (my previous video was with distortion).

For this comparison, I did a simple 10 second "clean" blues lick over a generic "clean" blues progression. I repeated the lick and progression for each pickup setting. This is a simple, quick and condensed comparison so you can quickly compare the different settings. When time allows, I will do extended, in depth more complex phrasing for each pickup. In the meantime, this is the cliff notes version. :)

Order of pickup selection:

Bridge JB TB4 - Full Humbucker
Bridge JB TB4 - Single Coil Tap Activated
Both Bridge (JB TB4) and Neck (Jazz SH2N) together, both full humbuckers
Both Bridge (JB TB4) and Neck (Jazz SH2N) together, BRIDGE COIL TAP, NECK FULL HUMBUCKER
Both Bridge (JB TB4) and Neck (Jazz SH2N) together, BOTH PICKUPS COIL TAPPED
Both Bridge (JB TB4) and Neck (Jazz SH2N) together, NECK COIL TAP, BRIDGE FULL HUMBUCKER
Neck Jazz SH2N - Full Humbucker
Neck Jazz SH2N - Single Coil Tap Activated

NOTE: The coil taps DO NOT come standard on the Jackson DK2M. I had my good friends
at Mouridian Guitar Company in Boston do the custom work for me. I highly recommend them
for any and all repair / custom work. I'm not associated with them at all, just a friendly
suggestion to any guitarists living in the New England area.

The coil taps are wired to push-pull pots. The "upper / north" coils of the
respective humbuckers are tapped, when activated.

Boss GT-10 effects processor direct line-in recording.
GT-10 "Fat Clean" channel for both the rhythm and lead.
No effects added pre-production.

A slight amount of VST reverb was added post-production through Reaper.
My goal was to keep the settings as dry and clean as possible so the raw sound of the pickups could be heard
and compared clearly.

Personally, in my humble opinion, I think the Duncans sound great. They have a very sweet tone to them for leads, and the single coil splits work really well.

Naturally you use a lot of gain and volume with the coils tapped, so I had to boost the split leads post recording to maintain a balanced volume level. But, volume reduction aside, I think the single coil taps work beautifully for the JB TB4 and the Jazz SH2N.

GUITAR USED:

JACKSON DK2M: Japanese model, 24 fret, alder body, maple neck / fretboard.

This comparison is for fun and reference only. As you know, with any guitar and pickup, the sound produced depends on several factors such as amps, effects, strings, acoustics and the player's individual personal technique.

I purchased the DK2M and had the custom work done when I went home to Boston in December 2010. I am very, very happy with this guitar. It plays wonderfully.

My other guitars include an ESP Mirage 1990-1991 Japanese model
EMG 81 bridge - single coil (SA?) - EMG 85 neck.
And an 80's B.C Rich Gunslinger also with EMG's. 81 bridge - 85 neck with the 18 volt mod.

I guess I have to admit I'm an EMG man by default, but I've always had a great deal of respect for Duncans. I'm happy to own a guitar with two great sounding Duncan pickups and,I'm elated with the results of the coil taps.

Well, that's all for now. Thank you very much for taking the time out of your schedule to listen to my humble comparison. . I hope the comparison was useful. Keep guitar based music alive. Keep playing and keep in touch!! If you have any questions, contact me anytime.

  • thank you. now I'm considering to do this with my jackson as well :)

  • @GuiltyOfSilence I'm glad the video was helpful. I have a short video with some distorted samples of the coil taps located on my channel. I'm hoping to have a proper full song with longer samples uploaded soon.

  • Thanks a million for this comparison. Very well laid out, and thorough.

  • @axegrinder87 Thank you very much for watching and for your kind words. This was very quick + simple,so the different tones could be compared quickly, maybe a little too simple, so for that I apologize.

I'm currently working on a demo CD of original full complete songs, with vocals, that will feature various guitars and various pickup configurations.I hope to have it finished sometime this year. I also hope to have the honor of you tuning back in when it's complete!
