Wow!! Sensational 2 part interview video! What a great interview! I had the pleasure of speaking to Updike about this story--I asked what happened to the three in bathing suits. I never thought to ask "what happens to Sammy?" He told me "they became good Catholic mothers I'm sure." What an Updike-ian response--so honest , forthright, and simple. He was awesome. He was so down to earth---qualities rare in our world. Does anyone know where I can get a video of A&P like this video shows! thx

this short story influenced me so many years ago to stand up to a 'boss', authority. god bless you, john updike! all these years later, this story is still fresh and stands the test of time, is fraught with meaning and a clear message: always question 'authority'...

While Sammy can definitely be said to be rebelling against the values of his time, I think Updike is wrong to throw the word feminist in there. Sammy objectifies the girls and ponders about women: "do you really think it's a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?" Anything but feminist.

John Updike wrote a pornographic section for
his 2006 novel "Terrorist." He must've
been trying to win a porno award.
