Sorry to have to break it to whoever crafted this video around the legend of the James Gang, but the song is actually about the 18th century English highwayman Dick Turpin. Just google both Turpin & Black Bess (the name of his horse).

I never associated the song with anything more than the story of an outlaw for the people that felt his companion was his horse—sang to his horse, Shit gets me teary a lil thinking about the end of doing right and the compliance we seem to be accepting. There are no heros and there is no fair.
