He forgot to mention checking the fluid. It should be transparent pink/red. If its black, brown, really really dark red and/or smells burnt. Thats a sign of a bad tranny. Not always though, ive seen trannys go out and have perfect fluid. But the fluid can still have tell tale signs.

@dmcintyre90 overdrive is usually fourth. Or fifth or sixth on newer transmissions. The button on the shifter is usually to lock it out if overdrive. Good for towing or hilly roads where constant shifting in and out of overdrive is unwanted. Some shifters have a button to keep it out of overdrive. And others have a position to keep it out of overdrive. For example, my truck is PRND321. The "D" position lets it go into overdrive, "3" keeps it out of overdrive. "3" lets it shift as far as 3rd

@dmcintyre90 Overdrive it typically referred to has a 5th, or 6th gear. Sometimes you have 3 speed transmissions with 4th as the overdrive. it is simply just an extra gear. When you look for a car, ask what speed the transmission is, then put your foot down while driving and count the shifts to see if it really is.
