Gregory David Roberts is an Australian author best known for his novel "Shantaram" which was released in 2003. He was a heroin addict and convicted bank robber who escaped from Pentridge Prison and fled to Mumbai, India where he lived for ten years from 1980 to 1990 until he was captured.

  • @1981Bolero - He states that the characters (names) are fictitious, not his experiences. There was a real Karla, Prabaker, Vikram, Khader Khan, Khaled, Abdullah, etc. He only changed their names to protect their privacy. The book is not fictitious, only the characters' names.

  • It's called a novelist, not a liar. His time in the slum clinic was a long time before this interview so I don't think everyman and his dog will recognize him. If you walked through your old high school would you expect all the kids there to recognize you? That wouldn't make any sense.

  • just came back from india read all book went to leopolds lived in india guest house went to slum..was great to experience it along with book

  • man, nowadays those slums are in rent most of the times and the population increased many folds, most of these slums nowadays have AC, refrigerators and used for commercial purposes, that is why nobody seems to recognise him
