Grammy award-winning musician Bela Fleck, a banjo virtuoso, always thought of his instrument as quintessentially American. In fact, the instrument is often associated with folk music from the American south. But when the native New Yorker, Fleck, started exploring the origins of the stringed instrument, his discovery led him on a journey far from home. VOA's Julie Taboh spoke with Fleck about his music and his voyage deep into the villages of eastern and western Africa.
