Established in 1969, Purdue's Black Cultural Center is recognized and acknowledged by the Association of Black Cultural Centers as one of the best centers of its kind. Director Renee Thomas says the center helps the community gain a greater understanding of African-American heritage and supports and enhances cultural diversity in the community. The center does a cultural arts series each fall semester and is the home of four performing arts ensembles -- the Black Voices of Inspiration, Haraka Writers, Jahari Dance Troupe and the New Directional players.

  • Awesome stuff!

  • Sure, be proud of something you had nothing to do with. I will be proud of things I actually work to achieve, rather than my skin color, which was an accident of birth and means nothing. See ya.

  • I never said "unity and equality" was my ideal. Since you are touting that you are ethnically "American" (lol) i guess "American History" shouldn't be taught in school also? It should be Earth history or something right? riight. There are no lines in any sand. Have you ever heard of HERITAGE? its the fact that you can distinguish between your mixed lineage. You just proved yourself to be ignorant. You are the only one talking about drawing lines Sir. Just let people be proud of themselves.

  • You said yourself you're opening a "Black community center". It may not block other groups from entering, but it does draw a line between people that doesn't actually exist. I am English, Chinese, Portuguese, and American in lineage...trying to find meaning in race is silly. The racial lines are only here because of past ignorance. I'd love to visit your center, but before I support it it'd have to be a "World Community Center" or something of the sort not drawing articifial lines in the sand.

  • There is no "Blacks only" sign on the door of that center. Your post is very ignorant. Oh, and thanks for the negative rating! The only thing that seems to be limiting you from learning about African history is your disgusting ignorance. As far as unity goes... what do you mean by "unity"? if you mean forgetting ourselves and our history to become more like someone else... then that's ridiculous. Hey when i build my center, I'll send you a personal invitation...

  • If unity and equality is the ideal, why limit your center to blacks only?

  • OH SHIT!!!...LOL

  • Probably off-key and with not much rhythm.

  • I'm aspiring to build a Black community center of my own in the future and I hope to model a great center such as this one. Thanks for posting!

  • I wonder how a "White voices of inspiration" would go down in the news?
