Never say "never"! Wait... (Dangit!)
-----------

This is Wario's ultimate creation in video game engineering. Check out the smooth edges on those pixels! Mmm-MM!

********

Here's the deal: this is a "micro-game" from the original game in the WarioWare series, well, a BOSS micro-game, meaning it's not really too micro (they're normally less than five seconds long!). Anyhoo, "Mega Party Game$" for the gamecube lets you access any of these microgames and choose the difficulty and speed you want to play at.

I chose max difficulty, and max speed.

Normally, when playing Wario Ware you ARE NOT going to reach this speed and difficulty for this microgame. You just WON'T. So, I'm doing something that was never meant to be done in regular play.

You see that counter between attempts? That's exactly how many tries it's taking me.Take note of the final count.

I did this all in one sitting. I'm just THAT... crazy.

Don't even try to figure out how long this took, the attempts took anywhere between a few seconds and a minute. So... well, heck, you can try if you REALLY want to, but don't expect me to be able to confirm it for you - I wiped this ordeal from memory! It's only resurfaced due to recent skateboarding/jet packing/boomerang-rocking/boulder-running experiences!

(What a day that was.)

*****

Here's the lowdown on how this game works:

Skateboarding
--------
"A" Jumps, "down" ducks, and you can probably figure what left and right does.

Got to avoid all the obstacles in Wario's path - and trust me, sometimes those falling rocks/barriers come up with a situation that's IMPOSSIBLE to work around!

At the end, you've got to jump up and grab that jetpack. Easy, right? Wrong. It's moving up and down and if it's too high once you reach it, you crash and burn! Need to be up the screen a bit so you can move back along with the pack to time the jump properly.

The Magic Jetpack Ride
--------
Hit the rocks. They explode and kinda kill you if you don't. Heck if I know how that makes sense! I'd think tiny rock fragments would hurt less than smashing into a big one!

Press A to dash forward. You automatically move left and right. If you miss, you're not likely going to have time to try again.

After this you have to grab fuel. And you've only got a moment to move over to where it's going to be (and sometimes they move around on their own!). This is one of the easiest parts... to die on.

Fighting the Giant Square-Eyed Square
--------

See that floating... thing? We don't want it 'round, or square either! We want to grind it into dust! Toss that 'rang at that sucka and make it go BOOM! Losing at this part is the ultimate shame - although seeing how crappy the treasure is, I'm not so sure winning's the best thing either.

"A" Tosses the boomerang. You can move around, too.

Rockin' Roll!
---------

There's a rock. It wants to kill you. So make like Indy and get out of there!

Press "A" to run.

This is the part I wanted to explain the most. You may think, "Oh, that sounds very simple. Mash "A", right?"

There's more to it, though. It only recognizes the "A" input at certain intervals. And you only need to press it ONCE at that moment to initiate a dash. Yeah, that interval is when Wario stops and bugs his eyes out. Guess what? Ever microsecond you delay that single press has that rock close in on you BIG TIME.

Very unforgiving. So, no, it's not just mashing "A". In fact, it's probably better to press it as little as possible. That is, timing it to press "A" at exactly the right time when needed. Because even being a fast button masher, the moments between each mash can be just enough to cause you to lose this one if not synchronized with Wario!

I THINK that about covers it. Oh. the bit after the win. That's the first boss. I'm demonstrating something rarely seen - missing the punching bag and having it swing behind you.

1:00 - This is NOT the regular (fast) speed. I sped up the video at this point.

1:22 - Back to normal.

2:33 - Boss one oddity

  • no checkpoints!?

that makes it harder and very frusterating

  • No checkpoints.

WarioWare is supposed to throw games that are over in seconds rapid-fire at you. This is a boss stage, so, it's unusually long. ...and the way I'm approaching it (Max Speed, Max Difficulty) is strange as well.

  • Also, lol at the ending glitch.

  • I'm not sure it's a glitch. The ball was just moving fast enough to swing behind me on a very near hit/miss. Chalk it up to the quirkiness of the title!

  • Actually, people do have to put up with that speed sometimes, but only in the Gameboy Advance original, when they go for a high score on the most frustrating stage in the game.

  • Top speed is reached at "72", when you are playing off of the grid. All of the high score sites I've checked nobody has gotten CLOSE. Also, personal experience tells me that this is a tough one (see video).
