The animation shows how detector (or k' vector) and sample are mowed when scanning a crystal truncataion rod (black line) with a surface diffractometer. The point measured correspond to the intersection of the ewald sphere with the crystal truncation rod. A film shows a scan of a crystal truncation rod emanating from a sample of epitaxially grown GaAs nanowires.
