We found these smashed kayaks on the Sacandaga River in August of 2008. Apparently they were stolen, and were swept away from the users by the high water and destroyed in the powerful river. We repaired two of them enough to paddle them down the river and back to our car. It was an exciting trip!

  • That's why you don't kayak whitewater in a recreational boat.

  • True story!

  • they can be fixed... Leave the kayaks upside down on a hot day, and the dents will either pop out on their own, or you can by kicking out by the inside, or pushing on it. The hole can be welded by a profesional welder... I'm not saying to keep it for yourself, but if the owner gets the kayak back to him... it could be repaired.

  • Thanks for letting me know, very helpful. Currently they're in the possession of the DEC. If nobody claims them by August, they're ours and we will attempt to fix them. Glad to know that we can!

  • One more thing, polyethylene is very strong... so I don't think the Damage was sudden... maybe they were left there, then all the pressure of the water deformed them into the rocks. They can deform like that... especially with all that force from the water... after a couple of days left like that... it messes them up.

  • Oh, I see. I didn't know that, cool.

  • Those all sound good to me!

  • I see! Good thing you like many different kinds of outdoor activities - you'd still be able to paddle, hike, ski, snowshoe, backpack and camp back there!

Those are all compatible hobbies with nature and wildlife.

Sorry if I'm being too stubborn!

  • Do you know how MASSIVE the West Canada Lake / Blue Mountain Wilderness would be if the owners of the Moose River Recreation area did not insist that the state not make it wilderness and keep that road open if they sold that land to the state? I think that was a lousy thing to do.

Plenty of room for mountain bikes in the MRRA, on snowmobile trails, and on private property!

    ;)

You seem to love wilderness - why would you put your support behind a less protective designation?

  • Actually, logging roads are evreywhere and they grow back! This would make perfect wilderness - and I like your idea of motor-free paddling. I especially like the idea of making the section of the Raquette River between this new area and the High Peaks motor free. That, after all is one of the reasons behind people trying to prevent it from becoming wilderness - there would be wilderness on two sides of the river at that point and it would only be logical to deny motors.
