Iran has been accused of forcing a woman into a TV confession as she waits to hear whether she will be stoned to death.

The interview, which has not been independently verified as being Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, shows the woman's face blurred out and her words voiced over.

Ashtiani, 43, had previously pleaded her innocence to charges of murdering her husband and adultery.

In the broadcast the woman admits to adultery with her husband's cousin and criticises her lawyer for publicising her case, saying it has brought shame on her family.

"Why did you publicise my case? Why did you harm my reputation and dignity? Not all of my relatives and family members knew that I am prison. Why did you do this to me?"

Human rights group the International Committee Against Stoning called the interview "toxic propaganda".

Ashtiani, 43, had previously denied murdering her husband

And Amnesty International's Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, said Iranian authorities had "orchestrated this confession".

"This so-called confession forms part of a growing catalogue of other forced confessions and self-incriminating statements made by many detainees in the past year.

"Statements made in such televised exchanges should have no bearing on Iran's legal system, or the call to review her case.

"This latest video shows nothing more than the lack of evidence against Sakineh Ashtiani."

Ashtiani's stoning sentence had been suspended after international protests against the decision - but the mother of two could still be executed, an Iranian judiciary official has said.

According to Amnesty, Iran is second only to China in the number of people it executes.

Iran executed at least 346 people in 2008
