It's always been amazing to me how few Protestant Christians even know about the addition of the adulteress story in John, or the addition of the verses at the end of Mark. In Catholic school they were not afraid to tell us, and they frankly taught the real story of the disparate collection of writings that make up the Bible(s) and their origins. People joke about Catholicism a lot but I say it's the Protestants with their literal Bible "truth" that are the real joke in the 21st century.

I think that is why they have "bible study" If you read it alone it raises a lot of unresolved questions, and seems perfectly human. Church structure relies on "faith" , which suppresses questioning.

I am Christian and I find this fascinating, but I still think that there is more to this than Erhman lets on. And probably has time for in a lecture. Still, I think that this is amazing.

This is the story of the Bible. But for the Quran, it has been preserved for more than 1400 years and remains exactly the same. Today you will find 10 years old (or less) kid that memorizes the Quran and he will correct you if you make a mistake as small as changing a vowel.

If the women had not said anything to anyone (snake handling additions notwithstanding), then how did Mark know to write that the women had seen or been told anything at all?

(The answer, of course, is that the Bible is as much a total contrivance as its "descendent" texts.)

Catholics are people I usually get along with, better than fundamentalist protestants, for sure. I guess most catholics recognize that their beliefs are just traditions, and stuff, so they are a lot easier to get along with.
