Critter Haven is an unofficial animal shelter about 10 miles up Tollhouse Road from Route 168 in Calfornia

Cynthia and Jack Sutherland have been living there for several years, and over time have collected everything from geese to yaks to emus; animals that needed rescuing and new homes.

But now the landlord, Jack's son, wants the animals and Jack and Cynthia off the land.

Jack is 78, a veteran of the Korean War and has suspected Alzheimers disease and they survive on a single social security check.

  • LANDLORD/SON - Allow them to live their lives out at Critter Haven - haven't you heard of family love? The animals will HELP your poor Dad living with the dreaded ALZHEIMER'S - read up on this terrible dementia and I'm sure once you're educated on the illness, you will leave them be - with all their critters in tact. Those animals are HELPING your father, why can't YOU help too. Your father needs a doctor, and as his son you should be helping him with that - not making his life a living hell.

  • I sure hope somebody watching this video can help these people and their animals. Such a sad story.

  • You are all so kind to care about a couple of old Codgers! Please accept our most heartfelt thanks!

  • I can't believe Jack's son is treating them like this. Major changes like this are the last thing that Jack needs with his Alheimer's. Best wishes Cynthia and Jack, I hope he comes to his senses and does the right thing.

  • The son wants to evict the animals, take away Cynthia and Jack's home then kick them to the curb and also take away their vehicles. What a pillar of the community he is. He, the son, wants his parents to end up with absolutely nothing, What is wrong with this individual?

  • What sweet people and what enchanting animals. Unbelievable that they now have to give the critters away and start looking for a home for themselves. They need legal help against the heartless son, and I suppose that is out of their reach financially. Sure hope help is coming from some place, Best wishes to you, Cynthia and Jack. You deserve kudos for your efforts, not this mess.

  • Unbelievable! That son must have a screw backed out. Sure hope he doesn't get away with what he has in mind. These nice people have given their home and labor to keep these animals safe and now they are having to give them away? AND go looking for a home for themselves? I so wish I could help and hope that someone who is more able will. They need legal help and that's probably beyond their reach. Best wishes to you guys - you are awesome and deserve the best ,NOT this mess.

  • The landlord is their SON? Oh Lord, how could he? I guess family means nothing to some people - I'm so upset about this - and can't imagine evicting my own family - and forcing them to get rid of their critters - it's terrible times we live in. I will donate. Hope others do too - if anything is worth giving to, it is CRITTER HAVEN. Let's hope the landlord, or should I say son, will think again - and see that blood is thicker than water - he must provide for his father in his old age. Good luck!

  • How awful for these poor folks. Especially hard, knowing that it's your son that's taking away your home and treasured animals. Doesn't he realize (or care) that his father needs routine and stability and things around him that he loves and is familiar with? I can't imagine that poor man living in a strange place without his animals. Where will Jack and Cynthia live? Is the son planning to help? Or is he just turning them out onto the street?

  • I am so sorry you have such a bad situation Jack and Cynthia. It doesn't seem possible that the landlord can get away with such callous behavior. Surely there are laws against this type of thing? I sincerely hope that things turn around for you both, and Jack can get to see a doctor real soon. :)
