The three songs are:
1. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-93): 'To Forget So Soon'
2. Anton Rubinstein (1829-94): 'Night' Op. 44/1a
3. Reinhold Glière (1875-1956): 'O Do Not Braid a Flower' Op. 18/7
Ukranian-born soprano, Netania Davrath recorded these Russian art songs in 1964.
In 'To Forget So Soon', the singer laments that her former love has already forgotten the tender meetings, the dances and the loving glances that she shared with him.
'Night' is a rapturous declaration of love whilst in 'O Do Not Braid a Flower' the singer claims that her soul is filled with anguish and that she can no longer love.
The piano accompanist is Erik Werba.
Paintings are by John William Waterhouse (1849-1917).
I totally agree with Berlinzerberus. i love the russian soul also. I have been a Ballet ballerina and am a literature professor. We dedicated last year to study Tolstoi and Dostoiewsky. After plunging into these deep tides of the human condition, it is difficult to come again to the surface. Russian oeuvres are the world because their nation is a world, everything is intense and inmense...
